Resistance Is a Stain on Massachusetts Government

Remember the November 2024 Ballot Question 1 titled, “A Law Expressly Authorizing the Auditor to Audit the Legislature”?
We the People voted for this and won decisively with 72% of the vote!Democrats, Republicans, and Unenrolled voters essentially gave a legal mandate to the Massachusetts government to proceed with an audit of the accounts, programs, activities and functions of all departments, offices, commissions, institutions and activities of the commonwealth, including those of districts and authorities created by the general court, the general court itself, and those of the income tax division of the department of revenue.
So why is it that our elected government leaders are resisting this audit? The resistance comes from Democrats Governor Maura Healey, House Speaker Ron Mariano, Senate President Karen Spilka, Attorney General Andrea Campbell, and Republicans House Minority Leader Brad Jones and Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, plus go-along-to-get-along legislators.
Their opposition begs the question, what are they trying to hide?
Shouldn't we taxpayers know about and approve of how our money is being spent, especially when everything from egg prices to energy bills are rising?
A legislative audit will help us follow the money in an open, honest way – holding our government accountable to the people.
The State Auditor is independently elected, answerable to the voters, and serves as a watchdog. That's what we need. That's transparency we deserve. That's good stewardship of our tax dollars.
As it stands now, Auditor DiZoglio is urging Attorney General Campbell to represent her office, to compel the House and Senate to follow the law, and if Campbell won’t represent her, to appoint a special attorney to act on DiZoglio’s behalf.
Also, due to no action on the part of Attorney General Campbell, former legislator and former Chairman of the Massachusetts Republican Party, Jim Lyons, took the initiative to file a lawsuit for Injunctive and Declaratory Relief which was then dismissed and is now on appeal.
The audit of the legislature is six months past due. The new law was slated to take effect thirty days after the November 5th Election Day. This is a stain on Massachusetts government and we need stain remover!
