Brown University Shooting: 2 Dead, 9 Injured, Person of Interest in Custody

Providence, Rhode Island, December 14, 2025 - Authorities say two people were killed and nine others injured in a shooting at Brown University on Saturday afternoon, with police confirming Sunday that a person of interest is now in custody as the investigation continues. The attack unfolded during finals weekend, triggering a large scale law enforcement response and a campus wide lockdown.

The shooting occurred shortly after 4:00 p.m. inside an academic building near the center of Brown’s campus. Students and faculty were ordered to shelter in place as Providence police, state troopers, and federal agents searched campus buildings and nearby neighborhoods. The shelter in place order was lifted later that evening after officials said there was no longer an immediate threat.

Brown University officials confirmed Sunday that the two people killed were members of the university community. Of the nine injured, several sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to area hospitals. Most of the injured are reported to be in stable condition, while at least one victim remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police said the person of interest was seen on CCTV cameras in the surrounding area before and after the shooting.

After an overnight investigation and search, Providence police announced early Sunday that they had taken a person of interest into custody in connection with the shooting. Authorities emphasized that the individual has not yet been formally charged and that the investigation remains active.

Police have not released the identity of the person of interest or details regarding a possible motive. Investigators say they are continuing to review surveillance footage, interview witnesses, and analyze forensic evidence. Officials stated they are not currently searching for additional suspects.

Brown University President Christina Paxson called the shooting a devastating tragedy for the campus, saying counseling and support services are being made available as students, faculty, and staff mourn the victims and await further answers from law enforcement.
