Car Fire Causes Heavy Traffic on I-195 South in Seekonk

Seekonk, MA – October 29, 2025

A vehicle fire on Interstate 195 South in Seekonk caused significant traffic delays Wednesday evening for commuters heading toward Providence. The incident occurred just past Exit 1 near Route 114A, prompting a swift response from Seekonk Fire and Massachusetts State Police.

According to officials, the vehicle was fully engulfed when crews arrived on scene. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, but the blaze sent thick black smoke high into the air, visible from both sides of the highway.

Traffic came to a standstill as all southbound lanes were temporarily closed, with congestion stretching back several miles into Rehoboth. Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes as cleanup operations continued into the evening.

“I was on the other side of the highway and could see the thick black smoke rising—it looked like something out of a movie,” said one onlooker who had pulled over to the shoulder to watch from a safe distance.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
