Shooting and Fire at Saturday Saints School Leaves Multiple Dead

A tragic attack struck a Latter-day Saints church in Springfield on Sunday morning, when a gunman opened fire during services before setting the building on fire. Authorities report at least four people killed and several others wounded, with emergency crews still accounting for those missing.

Police confirmed that the suspect was killed in a shootout with responding officers. Officials have not released the attacker’s identity or motive. Investigators are examining whether the fire was deliberately set to intensify the attack and are working to determine if the suspect acted alone.

The blaze caused severe damage to the church, forcing firefighters to battle flames while law enforcement carried out rescues. Survivors were transported to nearby hospitals, many suffering from gunshot wounds, burns, and smoke inhalation.

State and local leaders condemned the violence. The governor called the assault “a heinous act of evil” and pledged full support for the investigation. Leaders of the Latter-day Saints community expressed deep sorrow, urging prayers for the victims and their families.

All local congregations have been placed under heightened security as federal and state authorities continue their probe. Families of parishioners have been directed to a reunification center established nearby. The investigation remains ongoing, with officials expected to release additional details in the coming days.
